Ohio sales tax calculator

Ohio’s state sales tax rate is 5.75%. Counties add a local permissive tax, and some areas add a transit tax, so combined rates commonly land between about 6.5% and 8%. The calculator starts at the 5.75% state rate. Type the combined percent from the receipt when you have it. Grocery food is generally exempt; a restaurant tab is not.

FAQ

What is Ohio’s sales tax rate?
The state rate is 5.75%. County permissive taxes and, in some places, a transit authority tax sit on top. The Department of Taxation publishes the rate by county. A statewide 5.75% calculation is the state piece only.
Do Ohio counties all charge the same extra?
No. The add-on differs by county and can change when a levy passes. Two receipts from the same chain in different counties can show different combined rates. Use the rate printed for that store.
Are groceries taxed in Ohio?
Food for home consumption is generally exempt. Soft drinks, alcohol, and restaurant meals are taxable. Do not run 5.75% across an entire grocery total.
How do I tip after Ohio tax?
Compute the tip on the pre-tax subtotal if you want the usual restaurant split between tax and service. The sales-tax tool only multiplies the rate you leave in the box.
Is 5.75% my Ohio filing rate?
It is the state rate, shown here as an illustration as of September 2026. Combined county rates are what a seller usually collects. Check tax.ohio.gov. This is not tax advice.
