California sales tax calculator

California’s statewide base sales and use tax rate is 7.25%, the figure CDTFA applies everywhere before local district taxes. Many cities and counties add district taxes, so a Los Angeles or Bay Area receipt is often higher than 7.25%. This page starts the calculator at the statewide base. Replace it with the rate on your receipt.

FAQ

What is California’s sales tax rate?
CDTFA describes a statewide base of 7.25%. That base already includes the state portion plus the 1% local-jurisdiction share and the 0.25% local transportation component. District taxes of 0.10% to 2.00% are extra and can stack. The combined rate on a receipt is the number to type if you are checking a specific purchase.
Why is my California receipt above 7.25%?
Because a city, county, or special district added its own tax. More than three-quarters of California businesses sit in a district-tax area. CDTFA’s city and county rate table, effective July 1, 2026, is the lookup. This calculator will not guess your address.
Is the 7.25% the same for groceries and prepared food?
No. Many grocery staples are exempt, while hot prepared food is often taxable. A restaurant check and a supermarket cart are not the same base. Use the taxable subtotal from the receipt, not the whole bag.
Should a tip be calculated on California tax?
US restaurant habit is to tip on the pre-tax subtotal. Take the food total to the tip calculator, or use tip-with-tax if you want tax and tip in one total. Sales tax is not a tip.
Is this the legal California rate for filing?
No. It is illustrative arithmetic as of September 2026, sourced from CDTFA’s description of the statewide base. District rates change. Confirm on cdtfa.ca.gov or on the seller’s receipt before you rely on it.
