How does the bill splitter work?

Enter the bill, the number of people, and an optional tip percent. We add the tip (if any), then divide the total into equal cent shares. Leftover cents that will not divide cleanly stay on the last person so $100.00 / 3 does not invent a fourth penny. Nobody has to log in.

Can I split uneven items?

Not in this MVP. Equal N ways is the whole job. Itemized “you had the steak” splitting is a later page. If you need that tonight, itemize on paper and use the percentage tool, or pick a single equal number everyone can live with.

Is the tip split the same way as the bill?

Yes. We compute one total and divide that. We do not keep a separate tip pile unless you run the numbers twice. That matches how most tables actually settle: one card, then Venmo the even share.

Question 4

Should the splitter use pre-tax or post-tax tip?

Accepted Answer

If you type the pre-tax subtotal and a tip %, that tip is on that number. If you type a tax-inclusive total, you are tipping on tax unless you subtract first. For a clean subtotal + rate + tip, use the tip-with-tax page, then bring the grand total here to divide.

What is a typical split for a restaurant table?

Equal shares of (subtotal + tip), tax included or not depending on how the card was run. Auto-gratuity already on the check should not get a second percent unless you mean it. For two people, party size 2. For a six-top that already has 18% printed, leave the tip % at 0 and split the printed total.

Why not just use a spreadsheet?

You can. This page is the phone-at-the-table version: big inputs, one result, a copy button. We are not an IOU ledger and we do not name ourselves after any bill-splitting app.

Do leftover cents matter?

Accepted Answer

On a $100 total split three ways, two people pay $33.33 and one pays $33.34. That is 1¢ of honesty, not a policy. If that bothers the table, someone puts a dollar in the jar and you stop thinking about it.
