How much is a 20% tip?
Move the decimal on the subtotal one place left and double it, or multiply by 0.20. $20 bill → $4.00 tip → $24.00 total; $50 bill → $10.00 tip → $60.00 total; $100 bill → $20.00 tip → $120.00 total. A $47.30 subtotal is a $9.46 tip and $56.76 total.
Is 20% tip before tax or after tax?
US restaurant habit is before tax. Tipping 20% on an $80 subtotal is $16. Tipping 20% on an $80 + $6.40 tax total is $17.28 — a quiet extra $1.28. If you only see a grand total on a phone screenshot, switch the calculator to post-tax so the percent matches the number you actually have.
Why do people search “20 percent tip” instead of using a generic calculator?
Because they already chose the rate. A pre-filled 20% page is faster on a phone at the table, and the example table ($20 / $50 / $100) is the sanity check people want before they tap the terminal. That is the whole job of this URL.
Is 20% standard for Uber, haircuts, or delivery too?
It is a comfortable number for a good haircut or a careful delivery in bad weather. Rideshare is often 10–20% or a few dollars on a short hop. Do not copy restaurant 20% onto a $12 grocery drop without looking at the dollar result — percentages on small tickets get weird.
What if the restaurant already added 20%?
Read the check. If “gratuity,” “service charge,” or “auto-grat” is already there, the terminal’s 20% button may stack a second tip. Some rooms want an extra cash tip for a bartender or coat check; most do not want 40% by accident.
How do I split a 20% total four ways?
Set party size to 4. We divide the final total (bill + optional tax + tip) into equal cent shares and leave leftover cents on the last person so the table still sums. Uneven itemized splits are out of scope for this MVP.
