TipSplit

20% tip calculator

Twenty percent is the number most US full-service searches are aiming at: one-fifth of the pre-tax subtotal. It is easy mental math (move the decimal and double) and it is the middle or left button on a lot of modern terminals. This page locks the percent to 20% so you can split a dinner or check a suggested tip without the input drifting.

Sit-down dinner, date night, or any check where 20% is the number you already had in your head. 20% used to mean “excellent.” As tipped wages lagged and card prompts shifted up, it became the everyday default in many US cities. 15% still exists; it is just no longer what most full-service rooms expect. None of this is a statute — it is a habit, and habits differ outside the US.
