How does tip with tax work?

Tax = subtotal × (tax% ÷ 100). Tip is either on the subtotal (default, US restaurant habit) or on subtotal + tax. Grand total = subtotal + tax + tip. That is the whole formula. We do not look up your city’s rate — type it.

Why is the default tip on the pre-tax subtotal?

Because that is still the common US sit-down instruction: tip on food and drink, not on the state’s cut. Some people tip on the grand total anyway. The toggle exists so the math matches the habit you actually have, not the one a blog had in 2009.

Where do I find the sales tax percent?

On the receipt, or from your city/state rate. Combined state + local can be a messy decimal (7.375, 8.875). Type what is on the paper. The sales-tax hub is the same rate input without a tip. State-specific pages are a later pass — this tool is freeform on purpose.

What if tax is already included in the price?

Then you do not have a separate tax percent. Use the regular tip calculator on the number you were charged, or set tax % to 0 here. Inclusive pricing is more common outside the US. Do not invent a tax line so the tip looks “right.”

Does auto-gratuity get taxed?

Sometimes a service charge is in the taxable base; a voluntary tip is not. That is a house and jurisdiction question. If the receipt already shows tax on a service charge, believe the receipt. We will not pretend to be a POS.

Can I split the grand total after?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Copy the grand total into the bill splitter, tip % 0, and set the party size. Or use party size on the home tip calculator if you do not need a separate tax rate field.

Is this a sales-tax filing tool?

Accepted Answer

No. It multiplies the rate you typed. It is not advice, not a holiday-tax holiday calendar, and not a nexus calculator. Rates change. Verify locally.
