How Much to Tip an Uber Driver
Uber tipping is optional in the app and happens after the ride. A common US range is 10–20% of the fare, with a $3–$5 floor on short hops where 15% of $8 looks stingy. The calculator starts at 15%. Airport waits, heavy bags, and a clean car in a storm are reasons people go higher. This is not an Uber product and it does not submit the tip for you.
Suggested range: 10–20% of the fare, or $3–$5 on a short trip.

FAQ
How much should I tip an Uber driver?
Ten to twenty percent of the fare is the usual band. Many riders use $3–$5 as a floor so a two-mile trip is not a 90-cent tip. Longer airport runs and extra help with luggage sit toward 20% or a flat extra $5. Tipping in the app after the ride is the default; cash still works if you have it.
Is an Uber tip expected or optional?
Uber presents tipping as optional. Drivers see the fare and the tip separately. Optional does not mean “never.” In US cities a tip is a normal part of the exchange, especially when the driver waited, followed a messy pickup pin, or handled bags. You will not be kicked off the app for tipping $0. You also will not get a lecture from this calculator.
Does Uber take a cut of the tip?
Uber’s public position has been that 100% of the in-app tip goes to the driver. Processing and how that appears on a driver statement can still confuse people. If that policy matters to you, read Uber’s current help page — we will not claim a partnership or a live fee schedule. Cash avoids the question.
Should I tip on surge pricing or UberX vs Comfort?
Most people tip on the fare they were charged, surge included, or they tip a flat dollar amount they already decided. Tipping 20% on a surged $48 airport ride is a different dollar than 20% on a $14 Tuesday hop. If surge feels like the company’s tax, a flat $5 still reads as a tip to the driver.
What about Uber Eats vs a rideshare tip?
Different job. Food delivery has stairs, apartments that do not label units, and weather. Use the delivery page for that. This page is for the person who drove you, not a bag of noodles.
When should I tip — during the ride or after?
The app prompts after you are dropped off, which is the usual moment. Tipping during the ride in cash is fine. Waiting a week to tap 5 stars and $0 is how a tip gets forgotten, not how a policy works. Five-star ratings and tips are separate; one is not a substitute for the other.
