New York sales tax calculator

New York’s state sales tax rate is 4%. Almost every sale also picks up a county, city, or school-district rate, and the Metropolitan Commuter Transportation District adds 0.375% in New York City and several downstate counties. New York City’s combined rate is 8.875%, not 4%. The calculator starts at the state 4% so you can see that piece, then type the combined rate from Publication 718 or your receipt.

FAQ

What is New York’s sales tax rate?
The state rate is 4%, per the Department of Taxation and Finance. The combined rate is 4% plus local tax, and plus 0.375% inside the MCTD. Publication 718 (rates effective March 1, 2025, still the department’s current jurisdiction table as of its May 2025 update) is the county-by-county list. New York City is 8.875%.
Why does the same item cost a different tax in Albany and Manhattan?
New York sales tax is a destination tax. The rate follows where the buyer takes possession, not where the warehouse sits. Counties and some cities set their own add-on. A 4% state-only calculation understates a delivered NYC order.
Does clothing get a New York exemption?
Clothing and footwear under a dollar threshold have been exempt from the state 4% in many years, while some localities still tax them. The threshold and the local choice move. Read the receipt or the department’s exemption bulletin instead of assuming the whole cart is taxable.
How do I add a tip after New York tax?
Tip on the pre-tax food and drink if you are following the usual restaurant habit. The sales-tax line is for the state and the city. Use the tip-with-tax tool when you want both numbers in one total.
Is 4% the rate I should file?
Only if the sale is actually state-only. Most are not. This page is illustrative as of September 2026 and points at tax.ny.gov. It is not a return and not tax advice.
