Florida sales tax calculator

Florida’s general state sales tax rate is 6%. Most counties add a discretionary sales surtax, so the combined rate is often 6.5% to 8% depending on the county and the year. The surtax usually applies only to the first $5,000 of a single taxable item. The calculator starts at the 6% state rate from the Department of Revenue. Add your county’s surtax if the receipt shows it.

FAQ

What is Florida’s sales tax rate?
The general state rate is 6%. New mobile homes are 3%, amusement-machine receipts are 4%, and electricity is 6.95%. County discretionary surtax is published each year on Form DR-15DSS. For calendar 2026 that form is the county list. A few counties have no surtax and stay at 6%.
Why did the surtax stop partway through a big purchase?
On many sales of tangible personal property, discretionary surtax applies only to the first $5,000 of a single item. The 6% state tax still applies to the rest. A $20 lunch does not hit that cap. A boat or a large appliance might.
Are groceries taxed in Florida?
Grocery food is generally exempt. Prepared food, restaurant meals, and many household goods are not. Use the taxable subtotal. A 6% tax on the whole grocery receipt is usually the wrong base.
How should I tip on a Florida check?
Tip on the pre-tax subtotal unless you have decided otherwise. The 6% plus county surtax is tax, not a gratuity. Some receipts already include a service charge — read the line before you add another percent.
Is this a Florida filing rate?
No. It is the general 6% state rate as published by the Department of Revenue, shown here as of September 2026, plus a reminder that county surtax changes every January. Confirm on floridarevenue.com.
