How Much to Tip for Pizza

Pizza tipping depends on whether someone drove to you. Delivery in the US is commonly 10–15% of the food, or $3–$5 on a small order. Pickup and takeout are a couple of dollars or about 10% when the shop assembled a giant catering stack — not a second 20% restaurant tip. The calculator starts at 15% for a typical delivery. How much should I tip on pizza delivery?
Ten to fifteen percent of the pies, or $3–$5, is the usual US delivery band. Bad weather, a third-floor walk-up, and a six-pie office order are reasons to go to 20% or add a few dollars. A $12 lunch special at 15% is $1.80 — round up. The delivery fee on the ticket is rarely the driver’s tip.
Do I tip for pizza pickup?
Not required. A dollar or two in the jar, or about 10% on a large catering pickup, is the friendly version. You did the driving. The shop did the oven work. Tipping 20% on a pickup order because a terminal asked is optional, not traditional.
Is the pizza delivery fee the tip?
Usually no. Delivery fees keep the lights on, pay the point-of-sale, or offset the driver’s wage depending on the shop. Read the receipt. If a line says “driver gratuity” it is already a tip. If it says “delivery fee,” assume you still tip.
Cash on the box or tip in the app?
Both count. Cash on arrival is still common with independent shops. App tips should reach the driver according to that app’s policy — we are not that app. If you tipped in the app, you do not also need to tip cash unless you want to.
Late pizza — do I still tip?
If the kitchen ran behind, the driver still made the trip. If the driver got lost for 40 minutes with a cold box, people reduce the tip. Say something specific if you call the shop; “it was late” does not tell them which part of the chain failed.
What about a pizza buffet or by-the-slice counter?
Buffet service is a different page — often around 10%. A by-the-slice counter is jar territory, not a 20% sit-down tip. If you sat and someone brought refills, treat it more like casual table service.
