How much should I tip hotel housekeeping?

Three to five dollars per night is the common US range, left each morning so the person who actually cleaned that day can take it. A week-long stay tipped once at the end can miss the weekday staff. More if there are several people in the room, pets, or a lot of room-service debris. A resort that adds an automatic “housekeeping gratuity” should say so on the folio — do not double it by habit.

Bellhop, valet, and concierge — what is typical?

Bellhop: about $2–$5 per bag, more for a trunk or a long walk. Valet: a few dollars when the car comes back, not always when you hand over the key. Concierge: nothing for a map; $5–$20 when they got you into a booked-up room. Door staff who only hail a cab: a dollar or two. These are customs, not a hotel-union calculator we can certify.

Should I tip on the room rate as a percent?

Almost never for housekeeping. 20% of a $340 room is $68 a night, which is not the custom and will confuse everyone. Use the percent tool for the hotel restaurant, room service (watch for an already-added service charge), or a spa. Use dollars for the room.

Where do I leave a housekeeping tip?

On the desk or nightstand, in cash, with a note that says thank you — not under a pile of towels. Some people use an envelope from the desk. Do not leave it next to the minibar in a way that looks like you forgot your wallet. If you need a receipt for an expense report, ask the front desk; cash on the dresser will not print.

Do I tip if something went wrong?

Fix the problem at the desk first. If housekeeping recovered a lost item or stayed late to remake a room after a leak, that is a reason to tip more, not less. If the stay was a disaster they did not cause, you still tip the people who cleaned around it. Chargebacks and manager comps are a different window.
