How Much to Tip at a Buffet

A buffet is not a full-service restaurant. You plated the food. The staff still sat you, ran drinks, cleared plates, and reset the table. In the US, 10% of the pre-tax bill is a common starting point; 15% if they were on top of drinks and kids’ spills. The calculator starts at 10%. A steakhouse with a salad bar is still a steakhouse — tip it like dinner, not like a cafeteria.

How much should I tip at a buffet?
Ten percent is the number a lot of US diners use when they carried their own plate. Fifteen percent is the number when someone took drink orders, cleared three rounds of plates, and kept a high chair from becoming a wreck. Zero is what people do at a true cafeteria with a tip jar and no table number. Look at the labor, not the word “buffet” on the awning.
Why is buffet tipping lower than restaurant tipping?
Because a big piece of the service — plating, timing courses, explaining specials — moved to you. The remaining work is real and should not be $0 by default, but it is not the same as a five-course tasting menu. That is the whole distinction. If a buffet runner treated you like full service, tip like full service.
Do I tip on the buffet price per person or the whole check?
Tip on the pre-tax check, which is usually price × heads plus drinks. Kids’ prices and soda refills belong in that subtotal. If drinks are through a separate bartender, that person may want the usual dollar-a-drink treatment on top — rare, but it happens at hotel Sunday brunches.
Brunch buffets and hotel breakfast buffets?
Hotel breakfast included in the room rate is often a host stand and a plate — a couple of dollars is common if someone brought coffee to the table; nothing if it is a grab-and-go room. A holiday brunch buffet with mimosas and a long sit is closer to 15%. Watch for an auto-gratuity on those.
Should I tip if I only had water and one plate?
You still occupied a table they have to turn. 10% of a cheap buffet ticket can be a few dollars — that is the point of a percent on a low price. If the room is a food-court tray line, skip it. If a human cleared your table, do not treat them like a vending machine.
Before tax or after tax at a buffet?
Same US habit as other restaurants: pre-tax. A 10% tip after tax is not a scandal, it is just a slightly higher tip. Use the toggle if the only number on your phone is the grand total.
