How much should I tip a bartender?

A dollar or two per simple drink is the old cash-on-the-bar rule. Fifteen to twenty percent of the tab is the card-tab rule. Complicated cocktails, a tasting flight, or a bartender who kept a busy rail moving are reasons to sit at 20% or add a dollar per drink on top of a thin percent. Opening a tab and tipping 10% at last call is how you become a story.

Do I tip on each drink or once at the end?

Cash as you go keeps the pace honest on a standing-room bar. A card tab is usually one tip at closeout. If you started in cash and switched to a card, do not tip 20% on a tab you already tipped per drink unless you mean to. The calculator only sees the number you type.

Is tipping different at a cocktail bar vs a dive bar?

The labor is different. A six-ingredient cocktail took more time than a can of lager. People still use dollars at a dive and percents at a reservation cocktail room. Neither room is entitled to 25% by default. If a service charge is already on a tasting-menu drink pairing, read the check the same way you would at a restaurant.

Should I tip if I only sat with water or paid a cover?

If you occupied a stool through a rush and ordered nothing, a drink or a small cash tip is the polite version of rent. A cover charge is usually for the door or the band, not the bartender. Buy something or leave the rail. This is etiquette, not a fee schedule.

What about a drink ticket or an open bar?

Accepted Answer

Open bars at weddings and corporates still have a person making the drinks. A dollar a drink in the jar, or a $10–$20 walk-up at the start of a long night, is common. Drink tickets have no tip built in unless the host said so. Do not skip the jar because the wristband was free to you.

Cash vs adding the tip on the card?

Accepted Answer

Cash often lands faster and avoids a house card-fee argument. Card tips are normal and should still reach the bartender according to that bar’s policy. If you care, ask once. We do not process tips and we do not see that bar’s split with barbacks.
